Math at the Mall. Math even Miss B can do (ish)!

I haven’t done a math post in a while (or a post for that matter.  I totally thought I had published this post.. but there it was, sitting in my drafts!), and even though I really haven’t had much time recently (hoorah!  Four essays!) I’m doing a game review instead of the simple video that would suffice for a post, but leave me with a feeling that screams “you lazy bum”.
And so, I bring you the Math Mall game.  Math that is useful in every day life!  It’s really cool, I could even do it!  I didn’t use a calculator.  I used pen and paper, but not a calculator!

The rules.  Nice and simple.  There’s four stores at the Mall and you have to solve all the puzzles without the computer giving you the answer before going to the next store.  You can’t go back immediately to the store if you don’t win the game, you have to go to the rest of them (for good practice) before going back.

Nobel002
The toy store!  Here, you’ll learn about taxes.  How to calculate them etc. etc.

Nobel003

Look!  You can pick and count out change! and exact amounts!  Hoorah!  In all honesty, Miss B needs all the practice she can get!

Nobel004
At the Happy Hamburger, you learn to calculate tips!  How much to leave for how much you paid for!

Nobel005

Just a clip of the mall map.  Look, I’ve already completed two games!  I have two gold coins!  Whoopie!

Nobel006

The ever present question, which is the best deal for gym membership.  Ahh.. math is present in everything.

Nobel007

At the bank, we learn about how much interest is earned when depositing money!
Something I need to learn.  Once I start earning money…

And after the SECRET CHALLENGE…

Nobel008

You Win!!

Just make sure of two things:
1)  that when typing in how much money you are using you use $150.00  NOT $150.  They kind of call you on that.
2) Have fun!
To be honest, the graphics were a little sub-par which kind of didn’t make me too fond towards this game.  But the content is good, and the repetition sticks in your mind which is goooood as gumdrops for learning.

A Selection of Remembrance Day Media

Not having posted for a while (being reading break and having quite a lot of reading to do!  Four essays really gets you down…) I’ve decided to share some remembrance day poems that I enjoy.

Lest we forget.

A Wish

Maybe it is pointless
To wish for lasting peace
For all mankind to lay down arms
For all fighting to cease

I could despair of seeing
Peace throughout the land
No longer hearing talk of war
Blood mixed with desert sand

We do not have the tolerance
For cultures not our own
Seeds fly on an ill wind
From beds where they are sown

Hope lies in a child's heart
Not yet turned to stone
A mind free of prejudice
A child not alone

If all children of the world
Held each others hand
They could do what we could not
Make a Brotherhood of Man.

Mr Morton – School House Rock

I LOVE School House Rock.  There’s even a musical about School House Rock!  Click here to see what it’s about.

Really cute.  I want the Math Wiz to do it one day.  Or maybe when I become a teacher I’ll do it.  Because even though I have this hunka-hunka-burnin’ love for History, I have a relatively strong background in (my brother says that I am the definition of) theatre.  I will end up doing it eventualy.  Quite possibly.  It’s actually inevitable.

Anyway, here’s an equally cute song about subjects and predicates.  It reminds me of my friend’s music (he’s a composer.  And pretty good too!  Click here.

Lovely Lovely Lovely.

Anyway, after a good chunk of unsolicited advertizing.  Here is Mr. Morton.

Such a sweet man!  And such a good message too.  Feminism for the win!

School Fonts!

LINK HERE

Some of these are so cute!  And some of them could be so useful for the budding writer.  Here are a few of my favourite fonts.

101! Alpha Pikture

I think this is cool.  There’s words that correspond to the letters.  You could enlarge them and get kids to colour them in!

Elementarz

I really like this one.  It’s very neat and tidy.

Nobel001

This one is made for connecting the dots and learning to write.  However I prefer this one …

Print Clearly You can see the dot on the “I”.  I think it’s a little more convenient and clear.

Stoney Billy

VERY School House Rock.  Super Neat-o.

Piano Pooch

Link Here

The Math Wiz would probably die a little inside if he knew someone he knew learned piano off the internet.  Being a Math and Music Wiz and all.  The only reason I call him the Math Wiz is that “Math and Music Wiz” is way too big of a mouthful to say all the time.  So let it be known here that He does music quite well.  Professionally even.

Today’s game dabbles in my instrument of choice.  Badly by the way.  I’m not particularly phenomenal at the piano.  Piano Pooch hops along the keys and you have to remember which ones he hit in which order to play the Chinese New Year Concerto.  It’s a bit hard, but looks like it’s meant for younger children so I’d play this one yourself before unleashing your kids/students on it!

Nobel004

Look at Piano Pooch!  All decked out in traditional Chinese garb, cocked and a the ready to help you move along on the fantastic journey called “music exploration!”

Nobel002

See, he hops along the keys and you have to rebmember which order they go in so you can learn the piano concerto.  The keys are the same as you’d find on a real keyboard/piano, so it’s easily transposable to a real life keyboard.

Nobel003

Hop hop hop.  After each level, you win a composer’s bust too!

Look!  I won Liszt!

On a side note, I went to water my plants today.  Remember?  From my Food Glorious Food post?  Well guess what.  My black thumb didn’t get a chance to kill the plants.  The game has been discontinued!  I failed to notice that it was only for a limited time and a contest.  I was really quite disheartened to see that it was down.  But what can you do?  Those Who Be at The Internet make the rules, and not me.)

Bill Nye Explains Quicksand (like you see in the movies)!

Bill Nye holds a very special place in my heart.  I watched him forever when I was in grade 3.  And his movies still excite and fascinate me to this day.  Here’s Bill’s segment on QUICKSAND (like you see in the movies).

Expedition Africa

Link Here

Reminisant of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” series, this game is super fun and every time you play it it’s going to be different!Egypt001

Game play!  The rules of the game are that you roll the dice (leaving it up to chance!) and picking which dice you want to keep.  Kind of like Yatzee.  You can keep your weapons, get a new porter, more food, or medicine or you can move however many kilometres (miles?  I don’t remember..)

Egypt002

A screenshot of the game board.  Look at all the miles I’m chocking up!  Look at the porters and food! Look at the lack of medicine.  I’m pretty sure the next roll I lost three porters and the roll after that I was down to one crate of food.  This is a high stake game.  Most definitely a high stake game.

Egypt003

Look at my roll!  So very artsy!  So very precarious.  Only 30 miles (kilometres?) and four crates of food (which as you can see I DESPERATELY NEEDED).  But don’t worry, I still had two more rolls.

Egypt004

This is the choose your own adventure part.  Depending on the resources you’ve collected when you hit different checkpoints you get to chose how you’re going to pick your next step!  Every game is different!

Egypt005

Ahh… the end of the game.  I made it to the Mpanda Foothills!  Safe and sound and I only lost … how many porters?
